(True story written by a soldier’s mother 6/24/10)

“Mom?”  He says with a raspy voice.

“Son, are you in the states?”  I haven’t heard his voice in six months.

“Yes, Mom, we just got in.” I know from his voice that he hasn’t had much sleep, and he may have a cold.

We continue to talk about family.  Inside my head, I am praising God for protecting him and the other soldiers stationed with him.  This is his second tour of duty in Afghanistan.  On the first tour, one soldier from his unit did not return.

He will be in the states for two weeks.  Then, he will return for six more months of duty.  While he is here,  he will be able to witness the birth of his second child, and hold both of his children in his arms for a short time.  These memories will have to last a long time.

If you want to understand patriotism, ask our soldier’s mothers.  They look at the stars at night and know our young adults have seen the same stars.  Many soldiers are lying in the desert sands as they keep a watchful eye for numerous days and nights.   Mothers worry if their children are cold at night and burning up under a searing sun.  They worry if their children are eating too many MREs.  They hate the thought of sand flies and camel spiders.   And, I wonder how sad and lonely my son is when he can’t hold his delightful, little, four year old son in his arms.

My son does not discuss politics, does not discuss the future of our troops in Afghanistan, and does not explain his commitment to the Army.   He demonstrates his allegiance of his family and country, and chooses a life of commitment.

When you see soldiers this July 4th, you will observe dedicated and courageous people who are fulfilling a pledge to their families and country.  Please thank them and thank their families!
